THE UNIVERSITY OF MISKOLC IS DEVELOPING AND TESTING SUPERCONDUCTING MATERIALS IN COOPERATION WITH CERN

22. March 2019.

The Geneva-based European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) and the University of Miskolc have signed a cooperation agreement for the development and testing of components for the next generation of Hadron Collision Superconducting Materials. With the implementation of the international knowledge transfer by 2038, the University of Miskolc will be able to connect directly to the international frontline of CERN research. In this new project in total 30 university lecturers, researchers, PhD students and university students cooperate with the CERN research group.

CERN is the largest laboratory of particle physics in the world, to which Hungary joined in 1992. This is where the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is located, which plays a significant role in the research regarding particle and atom physics. The power output of the Large Hadron Collider, currently in the development stage, will be increased in order for it to perform ten times better than now. For this, a remarkable number of components made of superconductors is needed, developed and tested with cutting edge technology.
