Russian students at the Healthcare Faculty
A delegation from the Ural State University of Physical Culture (Russia) were guests of the Faculty of Healthcare from February 16-23. The ten-member group of students and instructors was led by Dr. Olga Kolomietc, Vice-rector for international affairs, and Dr. Nadhezda Petrushkina, head of the Physiology Department.
The university, based in Chelyabinsk on the far side of the Ural Mountains, was established in 1970, and enrolls nearly 2,000 students each year. It offers studies at the bachelor, master and doctoral level and offers a wide range of sport-related opportunities to its students. Its courses cover the entire range of sports studies. It has a research centre for social studies related to Olympic sports, while the main areas of research are sport genetics, training theory, and methods for enhancing performance and physical activity (such as the effectiveness of video analysis).
The primary goal of the visit was to establish a cooperation agreement between the two institutions, and within this to learn more about the academic programme led by the ME Physiotherapy Department focusing on rehabilitation & sport rehabilitation.
In addition to academic consultation, during the one-week visit the Physiotherapy Department introduced the modern examination and treatment techniques that it uses, with the participation of its students. During the interactive classes the Russian stuents had the chance to try out each element for purposes such as assessing patients, exercises for promoting physical coordination and developing muscle strength, applying the suspension rack (a totally new technique to them), treatment of sports injuries, either manually or with equipment, soft tissue mobilization and respiratory physiotherapy. As part of their professional programme the group visited the Cave Bath of Miskolc-Tapolca, as well as Saint István Cave in Lillafüred.
In addition to research cooperation and discussing strategies for joint research strategies, opportunities for joint publication, and agreeing on student and teacher exchange programmes, there was also time for cultural events and sightseeing. It was heartwarming to see the students getting on well, despite some language difficulties, and Hungarian and Russian students took part in several local events together.
Leaders of both participating institutions considered the visit, with its excellent atmosphere and many constructive activities, as a big success and as a very promising start to their cooperation.
According to the Dean, Dr. Kiss-Tóth, the Faculty of Healthcare can act as a gateway in building connections with the Chelyabinsk institution and other Russian universities of physical education. Vice Rector for Scientific and International Affairs, Dr. Tamás Kékesi, met with Dr. Olga Kolomietc and stated that he is in complete agreement with this statement.
