On May 20 the 12th Hungarian Competition of Applied Scientific Engineering was organised by the University of Miskolc. The contest, called “Hungarians on Mars – a playground for engineers”, has required competitors to design and build a variety of robots, with different shapes or mechanisms. This year, the topic was “The battle of magic balls and wands”.
Nearly 1,000,000 forints worth of prizes were awarded to this year’s competitors, including special prizes – this broke all earlier records, thanks to company sponsorships as well as the support of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Informatics and the Student Council.
The assignment for this year’s competitors was to build a spherical robot with certain specifications. The sphere’s maximum diameter was limited to 25 cm, and its maximum weight was 3 kg. The spherical robot had to operated using a wand or rod, which had to able to fit inside a cylinder 35 mm in diameter 50 cm in length. During the contest the robots had to make their way through an obstacle course to gain points in the round-robin tournament.
Twenty-four teams took part from engineering programmes around the country, including Budapest University of Technology and Economics, the University of Debrecen, Óbuda University, Corvinus University of Budapest, and also participants from beyond Hungary’s border (such as Sapienta Hungarian University of Transylvania). The University of Miskolc was represented by six teams, with remarkable success!
The Miskolc team "Előző csapat" was the winner (in a joint victory, as it tied with the Debrecen team), and second place on the podium was taken by another Miskolc team (AllCutRace). Other local teams also finished in the top ten: Budget Builders in 6th place and ARMatúra in 7th.
