University of Miskolc keeps rising in popularity

03. August 2018. 11:15

The number of accepted students broke a 5-year record – revealed in the first evaluation of the higher education application score limits announced on 25 July 2018. This number has increased by nearly 2% compared to last year, and this way the university will probably earn a prominent place among the higher education institutions in the country.

A total of 5,088 students applied for the faculties of ME, from which 2,316 pupils were accepted so far – a 46% acceptance rate. More than 78% of the 2,960 applicants with ME as their first choice can begin their studies in September.

It is important to mention that compared to the 1,722 state- subsidised students of last year, this year the figure will be 1,776, which is 77% of our accepted first-years. This in itself proves the stability of our institution. Furthermore, many people claim that a degree from ME is valuable on the job market, which is also supported by the fact that the number of self-financed students continues to be high (540 this year.

The number of those who are taking BA courses has significantly increased, from 1,358 to 1,424 (a 5% rise), while our higher educational vocational training courses attracted 6% more students (292 compared to the 275 of last year). 415 applicants were accepted into the MA courses of the university in the general summer acceptance process, which also marks the popularity of these higher- level programmes.

All in all, the number of students accepted into the University of Miskolc in 2018 is the highest in the past five years, which is quite an achievement considering the demographic situation, which means there are fewer people in this age group than earlier. This is true even though the minimum number of points needed for acceptance was raised in 2015 to 280 points, across the nation.

The numbers show that ME is continually improving its position in the ever-growing competition among institutions of higher education, even against the popular universities of Budapest and other universities in regional capitals.

Regarding the students accepted as of July 2018, most of the faculties show some growth in numbers: 7 more music students, 14 more studying healthcare, 46 more in economics and 90 more in mechanical engineering and IT programmes.  The earth sciences gained the largest number of international students. The number of students whose studies are supported by state scholarships is higher in f the faculties named above and in the law faculty.

The University of Miskolc, as the regional knowledge centre of the North Hungary region, holds itself responsible for the whole region, and sees its role in providing courses of use to North Hungary in locations within the region as an important part of its mission. In the 2018-19 school year courses will continue to be taught in the smaller centres of Ózd and Sátoraljaújhely. In Ózd, students will start programmes in Social work (Faculty of Arts) and in Engineering IT (Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Informatics), while a new group will begin their studies in the visiting nurses programme (Faculty of Healthcare) in Sátoraljaújhely.

The majority of programmes offered in the main application season will also be accepting applications in the August application season.
