The University of Miskolc has joined with the University of Pécs (Hungary) and Blidai University (Algeria) to compete in Solar Decathlon Europe. The competition (building and judging phases) will take place in Szentendre, as Hungary is hosting the 2019 competition.
On April 11th the SOMEshine Team introduced their design for renovating a house using energy-saving modern technologies on campus in the Fintelligence Center.
The design transforms a typical Hungarian form of architecture, a simple square house, into an energy conscious structure. It merges low budget solutions and, where possible, natural materials with high-tech applications.
The SOMEshine Team brought together multiple disciplines to tackle the task at hand. Architecture and automation are becoming nearly inseparable aspects of design, using innovative solutions that are driving industrial processes today. The team, using their common language of science, are working with dedication toward architecture that can create sustainable homes.
Across Hungary there are 800,000 of the so-called “Kádár cube” houses that have become worn out, out of date and are far from energy efficient. The contest provides an exciting opportunity to experiment with different techniques for updating these buildings, our inherited architectural environment and to explore different approaches to make them into environmental friendly, sustainable structures using a variety of methods.
Excerpt from the contest website: “By today Solar Decathlon has become the world’s most significant architectural innovation competition organized between universities. Initiated by the Department of Energy (DoE) of the US Government, the first Solar Decathlon competition was held in Washington in 2002. The basic goal of the initiative is to foster the cooperation of university researchers and developers with industrial partners and sponsors, building on the creativity and innovative abilities of young people, and design such innovative and energy efficient houses that may be showcase homes demonstrating sustainability, based on the use of renewable energy and the conscientious use of resources. The competitors not only make plans during the competition but they also construct the selected entries at the venue of the finals…Thus, as a result of the competition, a publicly accessible exhibition area, called “Showcase House Park”, will be open to professionals and the general public.”
