A joint project of the Faculty of Materials Science and Engineering and the Higher Education Industrial Cooperation Centre of the University of Miskolc has developed an antiviral and antibacterial lining, a photoactive membrane filter, which can be placed in a mask, reused several times, and increases the mask’s efficiency.
Researchers developed and tested a prototype for filtering out the COVID-19 virus (a relatively large virus at 250-300 nanometres), while also keeping the production costs in mind.
Since the lining can be sterilised and the mask can then be re-used, it would lead to reduced waste and threat of infection, compared to masks that need to be thrown away after each use, and that themselves can become a source of infection.
The university has applied for a patent and the results of the R&D project will be published, as well.
