The University of Miskolc has the important goal of arousing the interest of girls in science and engineering. It is no coincidence that the technical faculties are making this effort. The Faculty of Earth Science and Engineering is also participating in a European project focusing on this topic that has won international recognition.
The European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) and its Raw Materials Section (EIT RawMaterials) support the ENGIE project (https://www.engieproject.eu/), which aims to attract female high school students (13-18 years old) to geoengineering and geosciences. They are working to improve the gender balance in these areas.
The project is a collaboration between 25 institutions from 21 European countries, launched in January 2020, and will run for three years. The project is coordinated by the Institute of Mineralogy and Geology, Faculty of Earth Science and Engineering, University of Miskolc, led by Dr. Éva Hartai, honorary university professor. Another expert from Miskolc, Dr. Anna Farkas from Herman Ottó Secondary School, also works in the Advisory Board.
The project has recently been awarded the title of ‘EIT Success Story’, which is a major acknowledgment that can only be awarded to an outstandingly successful activity. From now on, the project will receive special communications attention through the EIT channels.
In addition, the coordinator of the project, Éva Hartai, was nominated by the Raw Materials Section for the ‘EIT Women Leadership Award’. A decision on the nomination will be made in September.
