As a way of saying goodbye, the heads of the faculties of the University of Miskolc shared many thoughts with the graduating students at the graduation ceremony. We share some of these farewell reflections here. Many of them mention “Selmec”, a reference to the long history and traditions of the university (UM’s predecessor was founded in 1735 in Selmecbánya, now part of Slovakia).
Prof. Árpád Palotás, Dean of the Faculty of Materials Science and Engineering:
“Centuries ago, far ahead of their time, the professors of Selmec provided a world-class education to the youth of the time. The task today is no less."
Dr. Emőke Kiss-Tóth, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences:
"Everyone is building these days. The country is building, families are building and the university is building. With knowledge we build the university, with the university we build the future. The aim of intellectual construction within the walls of the University of Miskolc is to educate self-confident citizens, not only by imparting knowledge of craftsmanship, but also by imparting moral stance: to shape a well-rounded man with the chisel of science, the blade of wisdom, the hammer of Selmec and the power of love."
Prof. Gábor Mucsi, Dean of the Faculty of Earth Science and Engineering:
"Continue to be curious, look for hidden connections! Be curious, be curious, be curious, be curious, be curious, be curious, be curious, be curious, be curious, be curious. I assure you that you do not have to do this alone. The University of Miskolc will always be behind or beside you. If you need professional help, you can contact us."
Prof. Csilla Csák, Dean of the Faculty of Law:
"The acquired knowledge gives confidence and self-confidence, but it cannot mean absolute satisfaction, because in our changing and ever faster changing world we cannot talk about having absolute knowledge. The pursuit of and the need to acquire it is an eternal and permanent law of any intellectual career."
Dr. Mariann Veresné Somosi, Dean of the Faculty of Economics:
"Your ship is now ready to sail. But it matters how you navigate, how you use opportunities, how prepared you are for the storms! There will inevitably be difficult times or setbacks in your career. But we hope that your studies will have strengthened your ability to think for yourself and to constantly update your knowledge, which requires diligence and perseverance. Throughout your years at your alma mater, you have learned that without effort, there is no lasting result."
Dr. Mária Illésné Kovács, Dean of the Faculty of Arts:
"The Faculty of Arts educates professionals in the fields of humanities, social sciences and pedagogy who are able to respond to the challenges of our time, who have a thorough theoretical and practical knowledge, who bring with them, in addition to their professional competences, respect for the values of universal culture, the Selmec values of belonging together, as well as the commitment to their profession, the ability to adapt flexibly to change and renewal."
Farewell of Dr. Sándor Papp, Dean of the Bartók Béla Faculty of Music:
"There have been several significant events in our music education in the academic year just ended. It was an honour to become a faculty with the support of the university and the Board of Trustees, our students won an outstanding number of national and international awards, and five new courses of study for teachers of music were launched at the Bartók Béla Faculty of Music. The neo-baroque Music Palace in the city centre is a worthy venue for music education and concert life at the University of Miskolc. And the knowledge acquired from music teachers provides a lifelong foundation for a successful career in music. To this end, I wish the musician a life full of success and a voice for the musician!"
