UM ALTHETES AT THE 2022 EUROPEAN UNIVERSITY GAMES

05. August 2022. 08:30

Young athletes from the University of Miskolc competed at the European University Games in Lodz, Poland. The university's sports club, MEAFC, brought together some of our best individual athletes and teams to compete in the Games between 14 and 30 July.

“There are already a lot of successful Miskolc student athletes, but in two years' time we hope there will be even more. This year we have the largest delegation of university sports in the history of the University of Miskolc," said rector Prof. Zita Horváth before the competition. "But results depend not only on the perseverance and diligence of our students, but also on the conditions in which our young people can play sport. Our university has excellent facilities and we are constantly improving our sports infrastructure.”

The Games, organised every two years by the European University Sports Federation, is a multi-sport event for young people in higher education. In 2024 they will take place in Hungary, split between the University of Miskolc and the University of Debrecen.

For this year's European University Games, a delegation of athletes from the University of Miskolc has been assembled. The B3×3 women's basketball team, the men's basketball team and the men’s beach volleyball team will be competing, and in individual events UM is represented by Jennifer Czerlau in judo, Vanda Tóth in karate, and Anna Sztankovics and Réka Vécsei in swimming.

Réka Vécsei competes in swimming events. How is she preparing?

Vanda Tóth does karate. Sport or studying? Or both?

Anna Sztankovics is a swimmer with experience inmany international competitions. Why are the European University Games important for her?

The beach volleyball team is the next to be introduced. The sport gives you a community, the coach is there to provide the support.

Women’s basketball: we visited the B3×3 women team's preparation training. Interestingly, they have a male coach. Does this present any challenges?

Jennifer Czerlau represents the University of Miskolc in judoand has already won several international competitions. There is no question: this time a medal is also in sight.

Men’s basketball: two members of the men’s basketball team speak about the way they manage the sport and studying together. Yet there are disadvantages to an independent study schedule.
