Young athletes from the University of Miskolc competed at the European University Games in Lodz, Poland. The university's sports club, MEAFC, brought together some of our best individual athletes and teams to compete in the Games between 14 and 30 July.
How did they do?
The 2022 European University Games in Lodz, Poland came to an end with the official handover of the flag, since the 2024 European University Games will be hosted jointly by the University of Miskolc and the University of Debrecen. UM students performed very well in the competitions, bringing five medals back to Miskolc!
The first medal for the University of Miskolc was the bronze medal in judo in the 63-70 kg group by Jennifer Czerlau. Anna Sztankovics made UM sporting history, winning the first gold medal in the history of the European University Games for a University of Miskolc athlete. She won the gold in the 50-metre freestyle event, and also won a bronze in the 50-metre breaststroke. Réka Vécsei added two more medals to the count – a silver in the women’s 200-metre medley and another silver in the 100-metre backstroke.
UM is ranked 35th in the medal table for the performance of its athletes, out of more than 400 European universities, and achieved the third best result among Hungarian universities at the 2022 European University Games. We are extremely proud of all of our student athletes!
