WEEK-LONG EARTH SCIENCE SUMMER CAMP RESUMES

This year, the Earth Science Experience Camp was back for secondary school students after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic. This time the base was Pálháza in Zemplén.

During hikes and excursions, prospective mining, geological, environmental and geoinformatics engineers could get to know the natural treasures of the North-Hungarian region, the field tools of earth sciences and methods for assessing the state of the environment.

"Based on the experience of the past years, a secondary school student needs nothing more than to get a taste of what earth and natural sciences are all about in the field," said Dr. Lajos Szalontai, Vice Dean of Education and Studies forthe Faculty of Earth Science and Engineering. He said that the camp will help them to better communicate to young people why it is important to be involved in this discipline. "Based on previous camps, it was fantastic to see that those who were here with us are now students at the Faculty of Earth Sciences a few years later," said Dr. Szalontai, recalling his memories of previous camps.

The Perlite mine in Pálháza, geotours in the Tokaj-Eperjes Mountains, and a visit to the andesite mine in Tállya – these are just a few of the experiences the high school students had. On the last day of the camp, the camp participants went to the laboratories on the UM campus to collectively test the samples they had collected during their week in the field.

Participant Petra Horváth said, "What I liked most was the company, the scenery and the hiking, because I love nature. I had already thought a lot about studying at the University of Miskolc, as my parents studied here, but after this I am thinking more and more about this possibility.

Áron Rémiás, a student at Avasi High School, said he hadn't decided yet which higher education institution to study at, but he was sure that the University of Miskolc is one that he’ll apply to.
