A joint R&D project for the construction and testing of natural gas transport system components capable of transporting natural gas with a hydrogen content of up to 10% was launched in April this year with the participation of the University of Miskolc and FGSZ Natural Gas Transmission Ltd.. The first workshop of the FLUMEN project was held recently on the UM campus.
Several institutes of two UM faculties (Earth Science and Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering) are participating in the three-year project. The gas composition analysis equipment currently used in Hungary is not able to measure hydrogen content, thus development is also needed in this area.
Hydrogen produced from carbon-free electricity will play an important role in reaching Hungary's climate neutrality target for 2050. In the FLUMEN project, the University of Miskolc and FGSZ are investigating the energy storage potential of hydrogen in natural gas and how the use of natural gas can reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
