Experiential education in an extreme location

For the fourth time, the Faculty of Earth Science and Engineering at the University of Miskolc organised a soil science camp for young people aged between 14 and 20.

The University of Miskolc organised the soil camp for young people interested in agriculture. They were also looking for people who are already involved in this field and would like to learn more about geoinformatics, said Anett Mészárosné Póss, research assistant at the Institute of Geography and Geoinformatics and one of the organisers of the Extreme Soil Science Camp.

"In the Extreme Soil Science Camp, we introduced young people to soil on agricultural fields, specifically on maize fields, this year on wheat fields", explained Károly Kovács, research assistant at the Institute of Geography and Geoinformatics, another organiser of the camp.

"After an introduction to the forestry at the arboretum of Farkassziget in Püspökladány, the young people dug their own soil sections, which was actually a 1.5 m deep pit. This was a major challenge in this period of drought, but it was still their favourite part," said Károly Kovács, adding that each team then worked with their own soil section, where they examined the soil composition and identified any problems.
