ADMISSION CHANGES FAVOUR APPLICANTS TO UM

07. October 2022. 10:25

The University of Miskolc will not set a minimum score for the 2023 and 2024 admission procedures. The advanced-level school leaving examination will remain a compulsory requirement for Hungarian applicants to the undergraduate programmes in Law, English and German Studies, and teacher training programmes for English and German teaching. Standardised institutional point categories will be introduced at the university level, and specific institutional point categories will be established for individual faculties.

A government decree published on 7 September this year offered the opportunity for universities to reform their systems of student requirements. The new regulations had to be incorporated into UM's student requirements by 30 September, as required by the Ministry of Culture and Innovation. As regards the rules of the admission procedure, the Act on National Higher Education provides for a two-year ascending system. An important change is that the admission procedure will be fully electronic, and applications can only be authenticated through a client portal.

In principle, the changes will apply from the general higher education admission procedure for Hungarian applicants in 2024. However, changes that are beneficial for applicants will already apply to the general admission procedure for higher education in 2023. This will mean that the statutory minimum threshold of 280 points for bachelor's and master's degrees and 50 points for master's degrees will no longer apply in next year's admission procedure, allowing higher education institutions to set their own minimum thresholds. UM will not set a minimum number of points in the general admission procedure for higher education in 2023 and 2024.

In the future, higher education institutions will be able to determine the range and level of subjects required for the calculation of the baccalaureate points for each degree programme and the advanced level school leaving exam requirement (currently mandatory) will be abolished. In the 2023 procedure, the range of subjects cannot be changed, but the higher education institutions will be able to set the level of the school leaving exam.

The new set of student requirements for undergraduate and postgraduate education in the 2024 admission procedure will be available on UM's website.  Information will be provided on the school leaving exam subjects and secondary school subjects that can be selected for the calculation of study points, as well as the list of institutional point categories that can be taken into account as extra points (to be set up according to the requirements of the degree programmes).
