"As a foreigner, I have experienced that we cannot live in an Ivory Tower, isolated from each other, because we are part of a community. If we can help people, then everyone benefits," said Dennis Engel, English lecturer. He stressed that he believes Hungarians need to be motivated from time to time.
"Since 2014, we have been collecting food for the World Food Day at the University of Miskolc. As far as I know, the University of Miskolc is the only one in Hungary to join the 'Universities Fighting against World Hunger' programme," said Roland Grubert, Director of the Hungarian Red Cross Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County Organisation, adding that student volunteers also help put together food parcels to be distributed to needy families in and around Miskolc.
"I joined the collection because I believe in unconditional love. We can help those who cannot afford to have food on their tables every day," said Máté Simon, an English major. He stressed that he believes it is a great opportunity to develop his personality and become a more accepting person.
World Food Day is a 150-nation effort to raise awareness and encourage decision-makers and the public to tackle the hunger that is afflicting humanity. The donations collected will be distributed in the Miskolc area by the Red Cross.
