Hundreds of people joined together and took part in UM's Pink Walk to raise awareness about the importance of screening, prevention and health awareness. The Faculty of Health Sciences organised the 'Stop Breast Cancer' Pink Walk at the campus as a tradition-building event.
"The Faculty of Health Sciences is very committed to the health of the population and to improving the health situation. That is why we have joined forces with the Hungarian League Against Cancer and the Breast Cancer Information Association to organise this programme," said Dr. Emőke Kiss-Tóth, dean. She said that breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women, according to the World Health Organisation. Every year, 7,500-8,000 women and 150-200 men are diagnosed with malignant breast cancer in Hungary. It usually occurs in women between the ages of 50 and 65 and is estimated to affect one in eight or nine women in their lifetime.
"We cannot stress enough that breast cancer that is detected early has a significant chance of being cured. This is why breast self-examination and breast awareness from the age of 20 and biennial mammography screening for women aged 45-65 are very important," she said.
Balázs Rozványi, President of the Hungarian League Against Cancer, said that prevention still does not receive enough attention and women still do not take regular screening seriously enough. He pointed out that self-examination and mammography screening are important because if the disease is detected in time, it can be cured.
