The University of Miskolc was ranked once again among the world's top 450 universities in the subject category "Mechanical Engineering” by the British company Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) this spring. The higher ranking qualifies the university for extra  support under a funding contract with the Hungarian government.

In this year's QS ranking, which assesses the performance of more than 1,500 universities in 51 disciplines across five fields, UM maintained its overall position. However, it was ranked higher in the multi-disciplinary category "Engineering and Technology: Mechanical Engineering” ,making it one of the world's top 450 universities offering technical courses. There is not a complete overlap between the technical disciplines in the QS measurements and those at UM, so in addition to publications by staff of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Informatics, studies at the Faculty of Materials and Chemical Engineering and, to a lesser extent, at the Faculty of Earth Science and Engineering also contributed to the result.

"Recognition of scientific excellence enhances the prestige of the University of Miskolc, and the advancement in international higher education rankings is a qualitative boost for the institution. According to the funding agreement, the Hungarian State provides this additional financial support to encourage the improvement of scientific publication and research performance," said Prof. Péter Szűcs, Vice-Rector for General and Scientific Affairs. He added that UM has also become more widely known to international students, who, typically seek out universities that are visibly present in international rankings with the intention of continuing their studies.
