EARTH SCIENCE STUDIES ACROSS COUNTRIES AND CONTINENTS

Students from abroad will spend six months at UM’s Faculty of Earth Science and Engineering in the framework of a European university cooperation. The visiting students talked about their experiences in a master's course supported by) the EIT-RawMaterials programme.

Master's courses in raw materials research have been introduced in cooperation between the University of Miskolc, AGH University of Technology and Science in Krakow, the University of Zagreb and the University of Technology and Science in Wroclaw, all in the framework of the MOBI-US project funded by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT).

The aim of the programme is to link top-level university courses in the raw materials sector and to build an education-research network. A natural part of the cooperation is that the universities offer mobility opportunities, including semester-long courses between students.

Each Master's programme has its own areas of specialisation, so students will broaden their horizons and deepen their academic experience with the partner university's specialisations during their semesters in Miskolc, Krakow, Zagreb and Wroclaw.

Ben McAleney, from Wrocław University of Technology in Poland, arrived at the UM’s Faculty of Earth Science and Engineering in September 2022. He has been taking courses mainly in the environmental field for the past semester. He says the programmes he is taking part in in Miskolc are very unique and he has gained a lot of new experience.

Daniel Felipe Moreno Lozada, a geologist from Colombia, is studying for a Master's degree in Europe. He says that in his country, geology is mostly focused on the oil and gas industry or mining, with less focus on the environment. "The courses are very good, the professors are very experienced. They also shared their experience with us. Overall, I think the University of Miskolc is great," he said.

Not only students, but also universities and industry are beneficiaries of the project, even if only indirectly. In the universities, the mobility network is fostering development of master's degrees related to the raw materials sector and new specialisations are emerging. And industry can benefit from well-trained, motivated young engineers with specific professional competences.
