The Hungarian Mechanical Conference, one of the country's most prestigious professional events, was held for the 14th time at the University of Miskolc between 29-31 August, 2023.
The meeting, which has been held every four years since 1971, was opened by Prof. Dr. Istvan Paczelt, Professor Emeritus of the Institute of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Miskolc, recalling the history and importance of the discipline on the Miskolc campus.
Speaking about the present, Dr. Szilvia Arvai-Homolya, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Informatics, said in her welcome speech that as a university we have to be at the forefront of education, general, basic and applied research, and last but not least, in the education of young scientists. She added that, in order to maintain the specialisation in applied mechanics, they sometimes have to revise the written and unwritten rules and even start training with a smaller staff.
Prof. Dr. Istvan Páczelt, Prof. Dr. Gabor Stepan, Dr. Szilvia Arvai-Homolya and Prof. Dr. Edgar Bertoti
The international roots of professional scientific conferences related to mechatronics go back to 1922. The first such meeting was organised by a Hungarian scientist, the world-famous physicist and applied mathematician Tódor Kármán," recalled Prof. Dr. Gábor Stépán Széchenyi and Bolyai Prize-winning mechanical engineer, university professor and full member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. He encouraged the mechanical engineering students present to remain faithful to mechanics, because mechanical knowledge has always been and will always be needed.
