The Sports Center of the University of Miskolc, this year it will host the XXI. University Sports Day of Miskolc, according to tradition on 22nd of September, within the framework of a working day without teaching. The UNESCO General Assembly has declared September 20 as the International Day of University Sports. Our university has proudly joined the series of programs that will move thousands of students across Europe, hundreds of universities, on this day.

Student Hostel E/1 is now undergoing renovation, scheduled to finish early next year. The work includes replacing all doors and windows and modernisation of the electrical system in the building, as well as security and safety systems. The rooms and common spaces will get new flooring and the bathrooms and kitchens will be re-furbished. The ground floor rooms will be turned into two-person rooms, while the rest will remain as apartments of two two-bed rooms. This is the first of the student hostels to be renovated.

The Hungarian Rectors’ Conference established a new section for universities in the category of foundations with a public service mission (the so-called ‘model change’) in its plenary session, and Prof. Zita Horváth, rector of UM, was unanimously chosen as the chair along with Prof. Attila Fábián of the University of Sopron. The position has a two-year term. Prof. Béla Merkely (Semmelweis University) was elected as the new co-chair of the Rectors’ Conference.

Dear Citizens, September 11, 2001 has been one of the dark days in human history. Nearly 3,000 American civilians, firefighters and police officers lost their lives in the attack on the World Trade Center in New York. Fathers, mothers, colleagues, friends and dedicated law enforcement officers died under the ruins.

The three-day on-campus festival MEN took place – originally scheduled for May, participants with full tickets could choose between nearly 30 different bands and party and hang out with friends to their heart’s content.

The terrorist attack in the United States on 11 September 2001 killed nearly 3,000 civilians, firefighters and police officers and impacted the world. In remembrance of the 20th anniversary of this event, the rector of UM and the mayor of Miskolc join in asking for a minute of silence to remember the event and mourn its victims on Saturday at 2:46 pm Central European time.

Cooperative courses in Effective Sustainabity are being offered by the University of Szeged, the University of Miskolc and the University of Sopron. Students in any course of study may join; each subject involves working in cooperative groups to accomplish a project. Two of the seven subjects are available in English: Effective Water Resource Management and Geoparks & Geotourism. 17 September is the last day for applications.

The Ministry for Innovation and Technology has published the latest sectoral recommendation which provides detailed epidemiological guidance to higher education institutions for the start of the academic year. The most important message of the document is that if you do not have an immunity card, you exclude yourself from many things.

It’s been nearly a year on online teaching at UM, and we’ve gotten used to a quiet, empty campus – but the students are back! The first day back was cool in temperature but warm in smiles. Welcome back to our students, welcome to the new ones, and best wishes for a great – and COVID-free – semester for all.

The MEN festival (Miskolci Egyetemi Napok – University of Miskolc Days) will be held on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th of September, during registration week. Besides concerts, there will be events through the day, many connected with student traditions.

In the week before registration week new students have the chance to get to know the campus, some of UM’s customs, and each other ahead of time. On Monday they toured the campus and learned the ’battle cries’ of the faculties, while making friends with yearmates. Freshman Camp was officially opened Monday evening by Dr. Judit Varga, chair of the Board of Trustees. Despite the cool and damp weather, the mood was good. The week’s events include parties, games, contests and a lot of information on the unversity, all while getting to know other students. Check out the video for some glimpses at what went on.

Six members of the University of Miskolc were honoured with national awards on 20 August, as part of the State Foundation Day festivities.

Laura Burai, a cellist and student of UM, placed 2nd in her age group in the strings category of the Danubia Talents International Online Music Competition, at just one point below the score of the winner, competing against musicians from 25 countries.

A UM project to develop a diagnostic procedure to identify genetic material in bacteria or viruses has been granted funding by the Hungarian NRDI Fund. The project plans to design an automated, efficient testing system using magnetic nanoparticle–quantum dot technology that can be used for both molecular binding and detection in genes. This would lead to a quick and standardised process and reduce the exposure of laboratory personnel to potential infections.

The Bartók Béla Music Institute has gained the status of a faculty, giving the University of Miskolc its eighth faculty: the Bartók Béla Faculty of Music. This will not produce any major changes in teaching or student support.
