LOVE THE WATER? JOIN THE LAKE TISZA CROSSING

The August 7th event involves either crossing Lake Tisza by swimming (3.5 km) or by human-powered boat (8 km) – or both. The aim of the Tisza Lake crossing is to popularize water sports and the Lake Tisza area, and the all-day event is a community sporting event. As part of UM’s approach to exercise, sport, and a healthy lifestyle, supporting recreational sports as well as competitive sports, UM students were offered lower event participation fees this year.

Passing scores were announced for Hungarian university programmes on 22 June. Hopeful students gathered at Szinva Terrace in the city centre to await the announcement, entertained before and after by live bands. Many students rejoiced, while others were disappointed at not getting into their first-choice universities.

CONFERENCE OF CIVIC ORGANIZATIONS AT UM

The event focused on opportunities for civic programmes and funding in the 2021–2027 period. It was sponsored by the Esély és Részvétel Közhasznú Egyesület (“Oppportunity and Participation Association"), the University of Miskolc and the Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County Government. Vince Szalay-Bobrovniczky, Deputy State Secretary for Civil and Social Affairs of the Prime Minister's Office, spoke about the current situation and future funding sources in Hungary. The new operative programme TOP Plusz will soon be finalised; the county may receive 137 million forints and Miskolc 33 million forints for regional and urban development.

COORDINATING UM AND VOCATIONAL COURSES

Future graduates of two five-year vocational programmes will have credits accepted in university studies, according to an agreement between UM and the Miskolc Center of Vocational Training signed on 14 July.

UM AND UNIVERSITY OF PANNONIA SIGN AGREEMENT

The two universities agreed on 12 July to assist each other in a strategic cooperation that will include teaching and training, research and development, and innovation, among others. Together they plan to provide new postgraduate programmes aimed at the changing labour market, to jointly supervise PhD students and to apply as a team for grants, especially in the areas of renewable energy, water management, circular economy, waste management, climate protection, hydrogen technologies, logistics and material sciences.

HUNDREDS RECEIVE DIPLOMAS IN PERSON

The University of Miskolc held its graduation ceremonies on 8-9 July, with over four hundred new graduates receiving their diplomas in person. Due to the pandemic, only students were allowed to attend the ceremony; others could watch live on UM’s YouTube channel.

TORCHLIGHT PROCESSION TO SAY FAREWELL

Graduating students in uniform, singing ancient student songs and carrying torches paraded through the streets of downtown Miskolc on 7 July. In this traditional event, called the “Salamander”, new graduates bid farewell to their university lives and pass the banner to the current students.

WORKSHOP OF EXCELLENCE FOR R&D IN NANOMATERIALS

A grant-supported project has produced research of international interest in the brazing of various nanomaterials with different melting points at a temperature lower than conventional procedures. The research group has been dealing with the thermodynamic investigation of nanomaterials, developing multi-layers of just a few nanometres in thickness, brazing of nanocomposites and nanostructured steels, and structural investigation of the materials created.
