The team from UM’s Faculty of Earth Science and Engineering won third place in the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE) Student Chapter Geo-Quiz, held online this year (first place was taken by a Malaysian university and second place by a Brazilian institution). UM was thus the best European institution. The quiz consists of questions mainly in geophysics topics that demand careful thought and also calculations.

The Faculty of Materials Science and engineering gave laptop computers to the first-year students studying in the BSc in Material Science. This is to assist them with their studies. Freshmen in the Chemical Engineering BSc were given laptops in the first semester. Students were urged to use their new laptops not just for basic studies, but to use them also for student research and project work, as the purpose is to assist them in preparing for their future profession.

Applications close at midnight on May 23 for the L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science program in Hungary. In 2021 two female scientists will win two million forint each (one under 35 years of age, the other under 45). The aim is to motivate young women scientists and researchers to achieve prominent and practical scientific results, as well as to motivate and promote the position of Hungarian women in the field of science.

The second event was held online on 29 April. The rector spoke about the importance of innovation and industrial cooperation for the university and the region, and the head of the local Chamber of Commerce gave an overview of the effects of the pandemic on local businesses. Representatives of business in Miskolc and two other cities reported on their situations, strategies and best practices. Finally, UM’s new Competencies Register was introduced to the participants.

Telegraph services have ended in Hungary due to low demand, after carrying countless joyful and sorrowful messages since the mid-1800s. Before the service ceased, UM and the Postal Service jointly sent nearly a hundred telegrams to ministries, partner institutions, leading business partners, and other organisations in commemoration of the role the telegraph played. Prof. Zita Horváth remarked that this university played a role in the first telegrams sent, and it was thus an honour to be the one to send the last telegrams.

The respiratory complications of Covid can produce severe symptoms. Different breathing exercises and videos are available on the homepage of the Faculty of Healthcare, and two teachers at the Faculty of Healthcare are available for personal consultation.

This year’s ✨MFK Challenge Tour✨ organized by the Faculty of Earth Science and Engineering (MFK) focused on the importance of selective waste collection and recycling in honour of Global Recycling Day. ♻

UM students performed well in the Student Research Society National Conference, represented in eight sections, for a total of 65 presentations by 64 UM students winning a place or being awarded a special prize. There were eight first-place winners, 23 came in second, and 10 placed third. There were also 26 students who won special prizes, among them international student Wina Lesmanawati Hidayat with the topic “Investigation of agglomeration of different sewage sludge in the field of Waste-to-Energy”.

A cooperation agreement has been signed between Hiventures Zrt. (a member of the MFB Group) and UM that will contribute to capital investment in start-ups based in the university and its environment. This aims to support innovation, allowing promising ideas to be explored and providing backing, including in markets outside Hungary.

UM is a centre not only of education but also of research and development and its off-campus utilization. The new register is designed to display the R&D services that UM can provide to companies. While it focuses now on engineering, it will later be expanded to cover other fields. The register will also be available in English.

The Hungarian Association of Logistics, Purchasing and Inventory Management organized the 10th Logistics Day on April 15th with the focus being a conference for the ProdLOG project, a joint endeavour between UM’s Institute of Logistics and over ten universities abroad. Presentations were given in Hungarian-language and English-language sessions. A new post-graduate course in logistical packaging design was also introduced.

István Stumpf, the government commissioner for higher education reform, visited Miskolc this week to meet with the Board of Trustees and hold discussions with university leaders.

The Student Research Society National Conference, held every two years, is a chance for undergraduate and post-graduate students from around the nation (and even neighbouring countries) to present their research, represent their universities and expand their networks. This year the event is being held online due to the pandemic.

April 8th is International Roma Day, celebrated by events focusing on the Roma culture and their social situation. UM took part in the production of a short film initiated by the group Episztémé Egyesület. The film features local cultural institutions, whose representatives read verses by Roma poets, followed by a cello recital. The film is available here (verses recited in Hungarian).

UM students began volunteering in November 2020, with 180 students having taken part so far. At this point 60 students volunteer daily. Two-thirds are students in the Faculty of Healthcare and assist mainly in coronavirus testing throughout the county. The students from other faculties serve as drivers. They work long hours and sometimes face difficult situations. The university is proud of these volunteers and their efforts to help keep us safe!

The three-year “Sustainable Raw Material Management Thematic Network – RING 2017” project involved four Hungarian universities – the University of Pécs, University of Sopron, and University of Szeged – to focus on raw materials and their sustainable use. Topics included secondary materials – waste and by-products of production – in several areas, as well as developing applications for their use in manufacturing, agriculture and energy production. The wide-ranging project led to 500 publications and was introduced to the general public in the International Project week event.

A new department will be formed to act as a new gathering point for high-tech development. Thanks to the active support of the Femtonics company, the new Femtochemical Department will contribute to teaching in chemical, material and bionics engineering and will provide a forum for interdisciplinary research on an international level in new scientific fields.

A total of 4,774 students have applied to start their studies at the University of Miskolc in the upcoming school year, with 2,624 selecting UM as their first-choice university.
