Presenters of the conference “The Role of Investigation in Criminal Procedure – European Dimensions” included the Chief Prosecutor of Hungary, Prof. Péter Polt, leading professors from Germany, Vienna, and Switzerland, and prominent prosecutors and defence lawyers. Lectures dealt with various aspects of crimes, including violations of financial and data protection laws, and issues regarding cooperate in the investigation of crimes that cross borders. The conference is part of a project in the European Commission’s Hercule III Programme of the European Anti-Fraud Office.

New orders have been put in place by the rector (Rector’s Order 14/2021). The requirement to wear a mask now holds for indoor spaces only, and in their own work areas those who have proof of vaccination are no longer required to wear masks. Events for up to 50 participants can now be organised. The university buildings remain closed from midnight to 5:00 am, with a few exceptions for certain types of workers. All other restrictions in Rector’s Order 13/2021 remain in place.

The 23rd annual ’Spring Wind’ conference sponsored by the Association of Hungarian PhD and DLA Candidates (DOSZ) was hosted this year – online – by UM on 28-29 May. UM’s rector, the mayor of Miskolc, and the chair of UM’s board of trustees were among those who greeted the participants, along with representatives of government organisations and programmes. The plenary speech was given by Prof. Béla Merkely, rector of Semmelweis University. The conference then continued with around twenty different sections, with presentations in Hungarian or English.

Dr Zita Horváth, rector of UM, recently shared information with the teachers and staff about developments over the past few months and the challenges awaiting the university. The model change (1 August 2020) has led to changes in how the university operates, now guided by the Universitas Miskolciensis Foundation.

The “MFK University of Miskolc” team of the Faculty of Earth Sciences and Engineering, won the third place in the 2021 Online GeoQuiz organized by the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE), where student chapter teams had to answer thought-provoking questions related to earth sciences topics in a competition against time.

Coffee grinds are mixed with a biodegradable polymer to form this material that keeps coffee grinds from heading to the dump. Two materials science students, Eszter Borsodi and Kinga Tamási, have used the material in 3D printers to create items such as lamp covers. Such uses of secondary resources fit with their philosophy of finding uses for waste materials. They took advantage of start-up competitions and have also published their research.

The Hungarian Cluster Organisation and UM have signed an agreement to work together to improve the economic competitiveness of the North Hungary region and to reduce socio-economic differences. This involves providing workers with a path to higher qualifications and training to allow workers to move into new jobs. Creating jobs can help keep workers in the region and make it a more attractive economic environment and tourist destination, all of which can lead to better social cohesion.

The AI Challenge was launched in December 2020 by the Hungarian Artificial Intelligence Coalition to contribute to the development of the AI environment in Hungary and the skills needed for this.

Nine students of the Faculty of Law took part in an international student conference/contest organized on May 14th by Nicolae Titulescu University of Bucharest, held online this year. All of the participating UM students won prizes. In addition to fostering international relations, this also lead to a possibility for the students to publish their work in English.

A vehicle drive system that lasts longer, runs more quietly and has higher efficiency and performance has been developed by Rába Futómű Kft. with member of its consortium, including UM. The research programme was funded by the Economic Development and Innovation Operational Programme and concentrates on innovative approaches to lubricating and cooling axles. UM’s contribution was in developing gearwheels and in working out a testing system, including vibration and noise tests, also applicable to braking.

Although universities have been given the option to extend the semester into summer due to the pandemic, UM’s faculty and student leaders unanimously decided that it is not necessary this year.

The aim of this challenge is to join others across the world in getting on their bicycles to reach the goal of covering 384,400 kilometres by bicycle. Last year participants in the “Moon Bike” challenge took two months to reach this number and the total ended up being 937,531.72 km. The organisers at the University of Pécs hope to break this record and encourage even more people to exercise in 2021. The challenge starts from 15 May but you can join later.

The Hungarian orienteering champion Levente Tugyi has been named Athlete of the Year by the City of Miskolc for his dedication, hard work, and success. He is a Hungarian orienteering champion and has taken part in numerous European championships and world cup events in orienteering and also competed in long-distance running – all this while studying at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Informatics, starting with t BSc, MSc and now PhD studies.

In accordance with the gradual lifting of preventive measures in the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic and the governmental decree regulating the measurements, rules and guidelines in the state of emergency, the following rules and guidelines shall be followed by all lecturers, researchers, staff and students of University of Miskolc (hereby referred to as the University).

On 27 April the Parliament of Hungary recognised the Universitas Miskolcinensis Foundation as the body that exercises ownership and maintainer rights over the university. This new status means that new regulations are being worked out by the Board of Trustees and the leadership of the university. The latest meeting for this purpose was on 6 May, where suggestions were made for the content, structure, and how to include the Science and Innovation Park.

On Miskolc City Day the city recognises certain individuals and organisations for their outstanding contributions and their contribution to the reputation of the city. This year four teachers of the university were awarded.
