The Interdisciplinary Research Centre for Alternative Conflict Resolution and Dispute Resolution Research Centre of Faculty of Law organized an international conference with the Working Group for Alternative Conflict Resolution and Dispute Resolution of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, titled Autumn Conference – Multi-coloured Mediation: Techniques, schools and trends in the 21st century. Instructors came to the trilingual conference from four other countries (the USA, Germany, Romania and Slovakia) apart from Hungary.

Bob Kaba Loemba, Head of the Scholarship Office and Campus France Centre gave a presentation at the University of Miskolc about the French scholarship program and higher education in France. He stressed that students at our university have a good chance for applying for a scholarship to study in France at all levels of university education, and there are excellent partner opportunities for interested teachers.

This year, as in the previous years, the University of Miskolc awaited guests with its awesome programmes, exciting presentations and experiments all those who wished to get an insight into the world of sciences and wanted to gain new knowledge and experiences in an interesting and understandable way.

Students can study cultural anthropology as a BA course only at one university in Hungary, which is the University of Miskolc, from the academic year of 2020/2021. The course is designed to meet the requirements of the 21st century. The prospective cultural anthropologists can use their knowledge successfully in the corporate sector, in public or municipal positions and in the non-governmental sphere, as earlier graduates do now.

On June 25th a farewell reception was held for international students graduating from ME. They gathered in the Senate Chamber to celebrate, recall memorable moments from their years spent here, sing a few songs and perform a dance.

The new centre, which was officially opened on campus today, is one of the outcomes of a five-billion-forint programme that focuses on innovative materials, modern material technologies, and intelligent management and automation systems.

A cooperation agreement was signed on 29 May between Paks II. Zrt. – the company responsible for construction of the new nuclear power plant units. The cooperation means that ME students can take part in the Paks II Academy. From September, students with a BSc in engineering can take part in a specialised post-graduate training course in nuclear power plant operation engineering.

The cooperation that was now put down in writing stretches back more than thirty years between ME and the Debrecen subsidiary of the leading firm in measurement and control automation. At the press conference after the signing ceremony the audience learned that the cooperation began with the donation of several Macintosh computers equipped with measurement cards and LabVIEW software. An increasing number of National Instruments employees earned their degrees in electrical engineering at ME.

Representatives of the University of Medicine, Pharmacy, Science and Technology of Târgu Mureş (UMFST) paid a two-day visit to ME. The delegation, led by the UMFST rector, Prof. Leonard Azamfirei, was greeted by ME’s rector on May 15th. Discussions were held on future collaboration and the two leaders signed an agreement for long-term cooperation.

An international comparative law conference was held on 11 May on the topic of laymen involvement in criminal law judgments, focusing on the problems and experiences of Austrian criminal hearings. The conference was jointly organized by the Institute of Criminal Sciences (Faculty of Law, ME), the Miskolc branch of the Committee on State and Legal Science (Hungarian Academy of Sciences), and the Research Centre for European and International Criminal Law (Faculty of Law, ME). Prof. Ákos Farkas and Dr. Judit Jacsó were among the organisers.

The University of Miskolc has joined with the University of Pécs (Hungary) and Blidai University (Algeria) to compete in Solar Decathlon Europe. The competition (building and judging phases) will take place in Szentendre, as Hungary is hosting the 2019 competition.

The European Landowners’ Organization granted its international Land and Soil Management Award to the GROW Observatory project, a Horizon 2020 project involving the Faculty of Earth Science at the University of Miskolc. The awards dinner was held in the Cercle Gaulois club in Brussels on 9 April, with Daniel Calleja Crespo (EU Director-General for Environment) in attendance, among others.

The three-year Horizon 2020 project entitled “Reinforce the scientific excellence and innovation capacity in logistic technology of the University of Miskolc” has wound up with a press conference. The one-million-euro project, coordinated by the Institute of Logistics, was carried out by a consortium with Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft e.V. IFF (Germany), Technische Universitaet Graz (Austria) and Intelligentsia Consultants (Luxembourg). Among the outcomes were 128 academic publications and 68 conference presentations.

A delegation of top leaders from Rajamangala University of Technology Isan (RMUTI) in Thailand visited campus on 26 March. Their aim was to discuss and strengthen the cooperation initiated in their initial visit in 2016.

The campus of the University of Miskolc has again been voted the most beautiful by readers of a higher education news portal. Voting was open for five days, and nearly 31% of the 22,300 votes were cast for our campus.

The Geneva-based European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) and the University of Miskolc have signed a cooperation agreement for the development and testing of components for the next generation of Hadron Collision Superconducting Materials. With the implementation of the international knowledge transfer by 2038, the University of Miskolc will be able to connect directly to the international frontline of CERN research. In this new project in total 30 university lecturers, researchers, PhD students and university students cooperate with the CERN research group.

The Quality Innovation 2018 international competition was sponsored by the European Organization for Quality. This annual competition is an excellent opportunity to gain an assessment of performance in innovation. The international awards ceremony was held in Beijing on 23 February, while the Hungarian branch awarded prizes at an elegant awards ceremony held on 7 March at Hotel Gellért in Budapest.
