The Board of Trustees earlier invited UM students to submit their ideas on formulating the renewal, strategy and vision of the University of Miskolc over the next 5-10 years, covering the main directions in teaching, research, internationalization, the university’s third mission, relations with society and industry, and topics related to campus life (university services, accommodation, sport, communication). Several of these ideas will be included in the development plan of UM. The entries, some which were submitted in teams, were evaluated by a five-person jury.

The 2021 QS university ranking by subject has been announced, with UM placing in the 450-500 group of the global list in the subcategory of 'Engineering – Mechanical, Aeronautical and Manufacturing'. This includes topic areas from all three UM engineering faculties, and is based on the reputation of the university among academics and employers in various fields, as well as on academic publication and citation rates. This is the second year in a row that UM has been placed in this worldwide higher education ranking by subject.

On 15 March the President of Hungary presented awards of distinction to eight current or former teachers and researchers of the University of Miskolc.

This competition is for any UM student, teacher or staff member with an innovative idea for a business or product and will be held entirely online this year. After applications are in (by 14 March) the mentoring stage begins, offering online consultations with specialists and experienced entrepreneurs to work up the idea into a convincing 5-7 minutes video pitch for the jury. Results are to be announced on 15 April, and the winning student will get use of a start-up fund of HUF 1.5 million; there also is a prize for the best presentation by a non-student.

Péter M. Szűcs is the new head of the UM Communications team. He graduated from UM (Arts, Law) and began his radio career in Miskolc before moving to Budapest and national radio stations as an announcer, program host and director. He has also held a variety of other positions related to communications (such as sub-editor for a news portal, spokesperson for the Supreme Court and Justice Council, communications consultant and trainer).

Students training to become teachers will now have the opportunity to gain teaching experience in Avalon International School, a private school where the language of instruction is English. They will be able to observe and take part in teaching in this modern and well-equipped school – a member of the Cambridge Assessment International Programme – and have the chance to gain first-hand experience working with an international curriculum, thanks to an agreement signed between the two institutions.

The Borsod Branch of the Hungarian Hydrological Society and UM’s Faculty of Earth Science and Engineering are sponsoring a competition for posters of photos showing the many aspects of water, as a blessing or a destructive force, in its natural setting or reflecting the relationship between people and water.

The Association of Hungarian Choirs, Orchestras and Folk Ensembles has awarded a prestigious KÓTA Prize for Choir Conducting to Prof. Zoltán Sándor, Director of UM’s Bartók Béla Music Institute. This is in recognition of the many master courses that he has held in Hungary and abroad and his work as leader and conductor of three award-winning choirs.

UM and the Hungarian Ministry of Justice signed a cooperation agreement aiming at broadening the range of courses offered at the bachelor level, strengthening alumni relations, creating new opportunities for internships, offering joint supervision of student research and providing wider access to information on how the justice system works in practice, with emphasis on victim support, activities of the probation service and legal assistance. The agreement was signed by State Secretary for Justice Affairs Dr Barnabás Hajas, Rector Prof. Zita Horváth, and Dean Prof. Csilla Csák on 22 February, the European Day for Victims of Crime and also the tenth anniversary of the Miskolc Victim Support Centre.

The HungAIRy project to improve air quality in eight regions of Hungary, funded by the EU’s LIFE IP programme, includes the Municipality of Miskolc and UM. The university is putting together a network of 60 particulate matter monitoring units. This will allow researchers to model air pollution processes around the city; results will be accessible by the public via Internet or an app.

The contributions of the late Dr. Mihály Komócsin to the welding community through education and research were acknowledged with a posthumous Lifetime Achievement award. Institute director Prof. János Lukács was given the Zorkóczy Béla Prize in recognition of his years of teaching, research and service to the profession, while doctoral student Judit Kovács received an award of excellence for her master’s thesis in welding.

UM’s Faculty of Arts will host the Humanities Section of this prestigious event, held every two years, in which student researchers who placed highly in local competitions present their research on a national level. This 35th Conference section will take place on 14-16 April and be held online, with over 400 students from around the Carpathian Basin taking part.

UM students are participating in the new two-semester online Hungarian Startup University Program (HSUP) from the Hungarian Research, Development and Innovation Office. The first half dealt with topics such as innovative thinking and the world of startups, and this semester 31 UM students will be finding out how to start and grow a company and competing for a scholarship to pursue an innovative idea.

A cooperation agreement was signed between UM, the National Directorate for Aliens Policing, and the BAZ County Police. One result of this is being able to offer registration for residence permits on campus, which will provide greater convenience for international students. It will also aid students in gathering research information related to the police; they can learn more about the police and its daily work by taking the course “Communication and Prevention”.

The aim of the cooperation agreement is to help UM in providing practice-oriented training to students of logistics or of mechanical, environmental or material science engineering, including opportunities for internships, scholarships and participation in R&D projects, while UM will participate in further training of the company’s employees. Major research topics are centred on the recycling, handling and reduction of road construction waste.

The occasion took place on 13 January in the Sándor Palace in Budapest, where President of the Republic Dr. János Áder officially named Prof. Zita Horváth rector of the University of Miskolc. She has been leading UM as vice-rector since August 2020, when the university’s change of model took place, and is the youngest person, the first woman, and the first humanities scholar to hold the office.

The award is given in honour of a Swedish diplomat who saved many Jews and other threatened people in Hungary during WWII. It was awarded to the institute in recognition of “activities carried on in the interest of a harmonious coexistence between majority and minority societies”.

The General Directorate of Social Inclusion and UM signed an agreement yesterday aiming to further strengthen efforts and programs to improve social mobility and help find a way out of deprivation for those in disadvantaged situations, including opportunities in the job market and stimulating local economies. UM students and teachers will join in these efforts, both offering expertise and gaining experience and knowledge in these areas.
