A brand new welding robot worth about 35 million forints was handed over today under technical supervision of the Institute of Material Science and Technology, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Informatics. The high-tech equipment, supplied by Rechnen Hegesztőház Kft. and Lorch Schweisstechnik GmbH, was installed in the laboratory along with the necessary safety and protection equipment to better serve the needs of industry and to modernise training.

Csaba János Zsófi (from Bodrogolaszi) was the winner of the 15th Bridge Builder Contest, winning also the grand prize of a notebook computer. The contest is organised for secondary school students in Hungary and ethnic Hungarians in surrounding countries. The task is to use a special computer program to design a bridge of steel and cable elements that can bear the weight of traffic; the winner meets these conditions while still being the least expensive. The task requires a great deal of time and dedication.

A Centennial Conference and the Traditional Lawyers’ Gala of 2019 were held by the Faculty of Law on 25 January to celebrate 100 years since the relocation of Eperjes Evangelical Law School of Eperjes to Miskolc.

The National Office for the Judiciary held its first ever National Civil Suit Competition for court clerks and secretaries (judges in training). The competition and the title of “Best Judge 2019” was won by Tünde Majoros Tóth, a graduate of the Faculty of Law at the University of Miskolc who is currently employed as a court clerk at the District Court of Miskolc.

The Smart HEI-Business Collaboration for Skills and Competitiveness (HEIBus) project held its final event in the Multidisciplinary Real Life Problem Solving (RLPS) subproject sponsored by Bosch. It took place in the video conference room of the university’s IT Service Center. Three student teams presented their solutions to the collaborative design tasks for the semester, with the theme of creative concepts for developing new connected power tools for hobbies and home decoration.

A specialised language competition in English was organised for the secondary schools of the county by the Language Teaching Centre of the University of Miskolc in the first semester of the 2018/19 academic year. The competition was designed to deal with several areas in terms of specialized language. The most important goal of the competition was to draw attention to the significance of learning languages and to highlight the importance of specialized language among young people who may soon become students of the University of Miskolc.

On World Soil Day, 5 December 2018, the University of Miskolc hosted a soil investigation competition. Students were gathered into teams of three and their mission was to solve a (simulated) theft with the help of laboratory analysis of soil samples from rubber boots and a spade left behind at the scene.

Prof. Juan Fernando Palacio and Prof. Juan Alejandro Cortes from the Pontifical Bolivarian University of Colombia visited the Faculty of Economics at the University of Miskolc in mid-November. The Professors and the leaders of the faculty discussed the expansion of cooperation opportunities between the two economics faculties, including the establishment of joint training in the English-language MBA. During their one-week visit, the Colombian guests gave several presentations on intercultural management and Latin American integration and returned home with many memories and professional experiences.

Once again the university hosted the "Waste Recovery 21" Conference of the four countries called the Visegrad 4 (V4 for short). The conference was held on 22 and 23 November 2018 and is held alternately in locations in the V4 countries: - Krakow, Košice, Ostrava and Miskolc. Because researchers, scientists and experts from other countries have also been invited to this international forum, there were representatives from 19 countries taking part this year.

The University of Miskolc and the Miskolc production unit of SEG Automotive signed a cooperation agreement with the aim to maintain strong and effective working relationships and to define the forms of cooperation based on mutual benefits, as well as to develop work programs to this aim. Starters E-Components Generators Automotive Hungary Kft. is making long-term plans in Miskolc. The company envisions taking part in the education of a new generation of engineers, and thus the company intends to tighten its relationship with the University, increase its effectiveness and recruit potential workers among students of the university.

Dr Szabolcs Nagy, the vice-dean for International Affairs of the Faculty of Economics, attended the "CHINA EDUCATION EXPO SHANGHAI 2018" on 25-30 October 2018. Representing the University of Miskolc, he took part in the professional program strengthening the cooperation between Chinese and Hungarian higher education institutions.

The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of the University of Miskolc organised an international scientific conference entitled Electrical Engineering Sciences Without Borders on 9th November 2018. Following the opening of the event, the electricity supplier E.ON and the University of Miskolc entered into a dual cooperation agreement. The contract was signed by Géza Nagy, Executive Director, on behalf of E.ON Tiszántúli Áramhálózati Zrt. and Prof. András Torma, Rector, on behalf of the University of Miskolc.

The 62th anniversary of the 1956 Revolution and fight for freedom was commemorated at the University of Miskolc. The event took place in the ceremony hall of the university, in which Gergely Eperjesi and Anna Lénárt performed scenes from that era, Gellért Schulz and Péter Pecsmány sung, and the members of the Szinvavölgyi Néptáncműhely danced (folk dancers: Liliána Szabó, Lili Lakatos, Ernő Matiscsák, Viktor Víg and Dániel Sztojkó).

From September 2019 students will be able to apply for the new chemical engineering programme within the Faculty of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Miskolc. The launch of the new program is an achievement of the great collaboration among Wanhua-BorsodChem, MOL Petrolkémia Zrt. and Kiss Cégcsoport, corporations in the chemical industry of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County. The main goal of the programme is to provide future professionals to work in the chemical industry.

On 11 October the Confucius Institute celebrated its 5th anniversary with a whole-day event. The series of events began with a festive plenary session in the University's ceremony hall, where festive greetings were presented with performances by students and teachers of the institute.

The first Dual Professional Day was held on campus on 8 October in the framework of the project called “DUAL DRIVE UNIVERSITY – The development of the dual and cooperative higher education professional and specialized vocational course of the University of Miskolc”. The project started a year ago to widen and deepen this type of course even more, furthermore to strengthen the connection with economic operators.

Curiosity won again on 28 September. This year, as usual, huge crowds thronged university sites for Researchers’ Night. On this night university labs were reopened, researchers put aside their instruments and books to attract people who are interested in spectacular and exciting experiments and exhibitions.

Is our water from the tap clean enough? Is consumption of tap water safe throughout the country? How long will this water last? Researchers can now reveal the current status of the domestic drinking water supply from a one- billion-forint subsidy provided by the National Research, Development and Innovation Office within the National Water Programme (Nemzeti Víztudományi Program). We discuss these topics with Péter Szűcs, who is a doctor of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, a member of the Management Board of the National Water Programme, and dean and professor of the University of Miskolc.
