The number of accepted students broke a 5-year record – revealed in the first evaluation of the higher education application score limits announced on 25 July 2018. This number has increased by nearly 2% compared to last year, and this way the university will probably earn a prominent place among the higher education institutions in the country.

The 29th National Welding Conference was held at the University of Miskolc 24–26 May, with this year’s focus on the advanced materials of automotive manufacturing and the development of bonding technology.

It was like being at a festival, looking at the sport hall of the Uni and its surroundings when the Admission Event was held on 8th June for high school students who applied to our university. Students who hopefully will be part of the university’s life could not only meet their future fellow students and the representatives of the faculties but could also build relationships with companies that they might work for in the future.

The University of Miskolc has been included – along with 10 other Hungarian universities – in the “Felsőoktatási Intézményi Kiválósági Program” (Institutional Excellence Programme in Higher Education) launched by the Hungarian government within the “Új Nemzeti Kiválósági Program” (New National Excellence Programme).

The Ambassador of the Republic of Moldova to Hungary, Oleg Ţulea, paid a visit to the campus today. Rector Prof. András Torma and the Vice Rector for Scientific and International Affairs Prof. Kékesi Tamás showed him around campus and then held a discussion on possibilities for cooperation.

On 27th of April the “Chinese Bridge” competition has been organized by the Cultural and Education Department of the Chinese Embassy (Hungary) and the Confucius Institute at the University of Pécs.

The Hungarian Applied Engineering Competition named “Hungarians on Mars”, in its 13th year, will be held on the ME campus this time. Thirty-five teams applied to join the event, which will be held in the University Stadium. The main challenge facing this year’s competitors will be time, since they have been given just 24 hours to build a robot that can make its way through the course.

The Ambassador of the United Kingdom to Hungary, Iain Lindsay, honored the Senate of the University of Miskolc by briefly attending today’s meeting. The diplomat delivered a 20-minute speech in fluent Hungarian, informing the senate members about Brexit matters.

The Hungarian delegation presented its joint bid to host the European Universities Games (EUG) to the European University Sports Association General Assembly on April 12th. This was the result of numerous agreements and on-site inspections by experts and EUSA leaders. Only two nations made it to the final phase based on their bids: Hungary (Debrecen-Miskolc) and Poland (Lodz) were competing in front of the EUSA Executive Committee for the right to host the 2022 and 2024 games. Hungary expressed its preference for the 2024 games, as it will be acting as the EU Presidency-in-Office in the second half of that year.

A high-level delegation from the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Hungary paid a visit to the university on April 5th, led by Advisor Liu Bo. They were welcomed by the Rector, Prof. András Torma, and by the co-directors of the Confucius Institute, Liu Jie and Dr. Dániel Kuttor.

Alicia Elvira Corredera Morales, the new ambassador to Hungary of the Republic of Cuba, came to campus on 27 March at the invitation of the rector. One factor behind this is the over twenty-year cooperation between the ME Institute of Logistics and the Institute of Logistics at University "Marta Abreu" of Las Villas.

An international conference entitled “Criminal law protection of the financial interests of the EU – basic principles and issues” was held on campus March 23rd, sponsored by the Faculty of Law, the Research Centre for European and International Criminal Law and the Association of Hungarian Lawyers for the European Criminal Law.

ME students and teachers now have free access to the Oracle Academy Program, which includes all of the course and supplementary materials for development in computer science topics. It would be well worth studying their materials, since those interested will be able to obtain no-cost vouchers for certification, starting in the autumn semester of the 2018-19 academic year.

In the first days of December Prof. Dr. Torma András, the rector of the University of Miskolc, and the two directors of the Confucius Institute (Prof. Liu Jie and Dr. Kuttor Dániel) took a visit in China.

Cooperation between the city and the university is naturally not new; the university was founded in Miskolc as the Technical University of Heavy Industry at the city’s invitation, and their interests have been joined since then. This time, however, a contract backs up the cooperation.

The Faculty of Arts celebrated the 25th anniversary of arts studies at the university and the 20th anniversary of becoming a faculty. The celebration took place in the assembly hall on 15 December. The Institute of Arts was set u pin 1992, and progressed rapidly, gaining the rank of faculty in 1997. The nation’s youngest Faculty of Arts, it plays an important role in Northeast Hungary, providing education in humanities, social sciences and pedagogy.

His Excellency Rahul Chhabra, Ambassador of India to Hungary, visited the ME campus on 10 November. The main purpose of his visit was to meet with the 22 Indian students pursuing their studies at the University of Miskolc.

Prof. Béla Illés, director of the Institute of Logistics at ME, discussed establishment of a dual programme centre with István Herdon, president, CEO and founder of XANGA Investment & Development Group on 3 November in Debrecen, headquarters of the company. Mr. Herdon stated that he would be counting primarily on the Institute of Logistics at the University of Miskolc for establishing a dual programme centre.

Prof. János Latorcai, Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of Hungary, welcomed the Cuban Ambassador Julio César Cancio Ferrer in his office. Ambassador Ferrer completes over 50 years of diplomatic service to Cuba on November 10th and will return to Cuba. Prof. Béla Illés, director of the Institute of Logistics at the University of Miskolc and honorary professor of University "Marta Abreu" of Las Villas (Santa Clara, Cuba), was invited to this meeting.
