This year’s Techtogether Automotive Hungary competition was won by the ME-Kart team of engineering students from the University of Miskolc. In addition to taking first place, the team also won several special awards at the competition, held during the Automotive Hungary Expo.

Following their summer visit, a group of faculty members from Beijing University of Chemical Technology visited on 18-20 October. The delegation was led by Dr. Chen Dongshen, a former president of the university, and also included Dr. Wang Yongsheng, vice-president for international relations and exchange programmes, and Dr. Wu Jun, deputy dean of the College of Economics and Management.

The 5th International Exhibition for Automotive Industry Suppliers was held between 18-20th of October at HUNGEXPO Budapest Fair Centre. It is the only international automotive supplier expo in Central Europe, representing the entire spectrum of auto manufacturing. This year there were 215 exhibitors from 12 countries, and Miskolc was one of them, along with the University of Miskolc, the regional knowledge centre represented.

Last year the technological manufacturing firm Intel began its successful programme, Intel® AI Academy, introducing artificial intelligence and related topics to university students in the United States. Now the programme has come to Europe, and the University of Miskolc was among the first to host it.

Following the earlier round in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, the second round was hosted in Jaén, Spain. Competitors from the University of Miskolc, the University of Jaén, and the University of Jyväskylä (Finland) formed mixed teams comprised of six students, two from each of the countries.

A consortium of four regional Hungarian universities headed by the University of Miskolc will carry out a new project aiming at research, development and innovation in the field of sustainable management of raw materials. The consortium, made up also of the Universities of Szeged, Pécs and Sopron is to focus on the use of secondary raw materials – waste and scrap materials – and the technological development and energy management needed for this purpose.

As usual, the university opened its gates to all curious visitors on a Friday at the end of September, in the now traditional Researcher’s Night, when the professors displayed their most precious treasures. The event fell on 29 September this year.

The annual two-day festival commemorating the work of Henrik & Frigyes Fazola was held on 15–16 September. The 11th gathering included not only scientific lectures – there were also events such as a traditional student party, trips on the Forest Railway, and the inauguration of honorary metallurgists.

Students from the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca (Romania), Esslingen University of Applied Sciences (Germany) and the University of Miskolc participated in the first intensive week of the HEIBus teamwork project in Cluj-Napoca on 11–16 September.

The Regional Studies Association held the RSA Central & Eastern Europe Conference in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, on September 10-13. At the gala dinner the president of the association presented the RSA Routledge Early Career Award (for researchers under 35 years of age) to Dr. Dóra Szendi, assistant lecturer at the Faculty of Economics, based on her submitted paper. This is the first time a member of the university has been recognised by the organisation.

This summer Miskolc hosted the 14th European Universities Basketball Championship. Spectators had the privilege of seeing some excellent matches and a Hungarian team on the podium to receive a bronze medal. The city and the university were pleased with the recognition they received for an extremely well-organised event.

The team “Formula Racing Miskolc” competed in the Formula Student Hungary event, held 17-20 August on the campus of Széchenyi István University in Győr. The team of ME students, despite the less-than-ideal circumstances of a newly formed team and a newly designed vehicle, still managed to gain 21st place out of the 41 teams from 17 countries around the world.

The number of international students attending ME is continuing to grow. This is why the opening ceremony is to be held in two languages for the first time. The ceremony will be held on 8 September 2017 beginning from 10:30, attended by newly enrolled students from Hungary and from abroad, along with ambassadors from several countries.

The University, in cooperation with the local government of Miskolc, organised and hosted the 20th World University Orienteering Championship in the summer of 2016. This event was selected out of over 30 university world championships for the “Best WUC 2016” award.

The University shows excellent results based on the 2017 general admissions procedure for Hungary. Overall, the number of students winning a place in the university is the largest in the past four years, which is an achievement given the general demographic trends and tendency to move out of the North Hungary region. The 2.7% growth in student numbers accepted puts it in 4th place among all general institutions of higher education in the country, and 2nd place for institutions located outside of the capitol.

The prestigious international sports event hosted in Miskolc ended 23 July, and thanks to the bronze-medal-winning women’s team from the University of Physical Education, Hungarians were also on the podium. Other Hungarian teams also participated in the European Universities Basketball Championship, with the men’s team from the University of Debrecen finishing in 10th place and the University of Miskolc team in 12th. Participating teams were able to gain valuable experience towards future competitions.

Representatives of industry and academia from Chongquing, considered one of the major auto industry centres of China, visited ME on 21 July. The aim of the visit was to familiarise both sides with the possibilities for cooperation in education and in research and to establish relations between them.

In early June a short professional visit was paid to the University of Miskolc by members of the Beijing University of Chemical Technology, led by its president, Prof. Tan Tianwei.
